Summer on The Front Range

Now that warm weather is (finally) here, the garden is bursting with color. The peonies and roses are blooming and it's quite pretty. Now that Chip and I have decided to stay in Castle Rock, at least for now, we are putting some time into our garden, which has been a little neglected the last few years. Today we weeded and planted some new perennials, mostly grasses and succulents (everything here must be very, very drought tolerant).

We are enjoying the many birds this year. They are attracted by both by our bird feeders and our pond and waterfall. We have a meadow lark nearby and he can be heard most of the time. We have a bluebird house and a pair of mating mountain bluebirds are nesting this year. It's fun to watch them. Mom and Dad take turns sitting on the eggs. They don't leave them alone for a second and It's a graceful dance, as one flies in as the other flies out. We expect the eggs to hatch any day now, and then mom and dad will be busy fetching crickets for the hungry chicks.

We also have a new critter in our yard this year, a toad. We have heard him on recent nights (he is quite loud), but I had not seen him until today, when I accidentally disturbed him while weeding. I hope I didn't disturb him too much, and Mr. Toad decides to stay.
